Let’s think bigger.
Candor is an editing and media consulting company that empowers academics to shape critical conversations by amplifying their voices and ideas. We believe in the power of research to change our world and in the people who work hard to create ideas worth spreading.
But true to our name, Candor tells it how it is. It can be hard to project your voice outside of your field, to communicate your research to editors and search committees and tackle the unfamiliar task of popular media and trade publishing. Writing, speaking, and building a platform can be difficult skills to develop by yourself. Scholarly writers need a support system, the knowledge and skills to succeed, and the belief that they can.
If you find yourself agreeing, welcome. My name is Tara Dankel. I got my PhD from Harvard University in 2015, then taught philosophy at the Singapore University of Technology and Design before making the move to full-time scholarly editing in 2018. Over the past three years, I have worked with researchers and experts all over the world to increase the impact of their ideas and help them build the processes and confidence to do so.
As an editor, media consultant and writing and performance coach, I support clients at all stages of their project, from developing ideas to scouting publication venues to creating a coherent platform for their work. Throughout all stages of your process, I am here to lend a critical eye and an empathetic ear. As a researcher, writer and lecturer, I know the challenge and reward that comes with developing an idea and putting it out into the world.
I’ve worked with clients in the fields of queer theory, women, gender and sexuality studies, philosophy, religion, literature, African-American studies, Middle East studies, political science and international relations, critical race theory, cultural studies, environmental studies, business, urban studies, history, and anthropology. I also served for two years as the Managing Editor of the International Journal of Middle East Studies, gaining valuable knowledge about the academic publishing industry. My own work has appeared in The Georgetown Journal of International Affairs, Symposia, and Foucault Studies. I’ve given numerous invited talks on issues ranging from urban space to AI sex robots; so trust me, whatever you’re researching, I’m excited about it.
Your ideas deserve to be heard - so let’s get started.
